A gentler relationship with the bedside pile.

A reading goal can be motivating, until it begins to choose your books for you. Sometimes the story you want to spend time with is slow, complicated or simply not the one everyone else is discussing.
Try choosing by curiosity rather than completion. Read a few pages before deciding whether to continue. You can return a library book unfinished and still have discovered something about your taste.
Reading is a way to spend time, not only a way to accumulate titles. Let a book keep you company for as long as you want it to.
